Chatham Prepares for Independence Day Parade

Fourth of July Parade in Chatham will feature 50 units

The 54th annual Chatham Borough Fire Department Independence Day Celebration is set for Saturday, July 4.

Serving as this year’s parade Grand Marshal is a Chatham Borough resident and 47-year veteran of the fire department, Herb Cannon, borough engineer from 1969-92, and president of the department’s Mutual Benefit Association. Mr. Cannon served as secretary of the fire department from 1964-78, followed by a stint as treasurer through 2002. He has been the department’s budget director since 1975.

The Independence Day festivities will begin at 9:15 a.m. with a flag-raising ceremony at Firehouse Plaza by the Whippany Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Borough Mayor Nelson Vaughan and the Borough Council will inspect the uniformed Chatham Borough Volunteer Fire Department firefighters after the ceremony. A 50-unit parade begins at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of Main Street at Hillside Avenue and will travel west to Chatham Middle School. It will feature 10 bands, 10 fire departments and floats and vehicles representing both borough and township organizations.

Fireworks begin a 9 at the middle school field. Gates are open at 7. At 7:30 music by the Magic Moments will be played.
